Casting Course Information
The Australian Fly Fishing School

  1. Beginner, half day: $165

It is critical that you do not develop bad habits when you start fly casting. Get the right advice from
the start. This course is a must for anyone starting out in fly fishing and highly recommended for
people with less than 18 months experience. We will give you a thorough understanding of
fundamental casting techniques. All you need to know about the knots and leader configurations
combined with a basic understanding of the fishing skills. You will leave the class confident, ready
and able to catch fish in rivers and lakes. All equipment is supplied if required.

  2. Intermediate, full day: $230

This class is recommended for casters that have completed a beginner course or have 3 years
    experience.
A solid days work on rod loading concepts which lead to increased line shooting, line speed, accuracy
and distance. Learn a variety of casting techniques like tip over shoulder casts, the ‘Hayes’ triangular
roll casting technique and single hauling. Understand the cause of trailing loops and other major
casting faults. Advanced knot tying, fly design and fishing techniques are covered in the lunch break.

  3. Advanced Modules, half day: $165

Ideally for casters that have completed an intermediate level full day course or have more than 3 years experience. Choose your area of weakness or select a module that fits in with your fishing methods. Work diligently through all the modules and become a truly great caster.

    • Advanced Power & Distance

Learn pulling, double hauling, swoop and reverse drift. These are all techniques that lead to tighter loops and higher line speed essential for saltwater, lake fishing, heavy or bulky fly and indicator casting. You will leave this class amazed at how little energy you need to make long effortless casts. This class is almost mandatory for all fly fishers after reaching an intermediate level.

    • Advanced Roll and Spey Casting Techniques

Understanding roll and spey casting at this level will also help enormously with all other aspects of fly casting. Master the skills of ‘live’ roll casting for exceptional distance. Switch Casts, Half Rolls and the magic of the Snake Roll Cast will add another dimension to your fly fishing. Please understand that roll casting is an important cast in most fishing situations. It is not just for river fishing when there are restrictions behind. Let us show you why the students at these classes last season absolutely loved it. Roll Casting is now their favourite cast. Hopefully it will become yours.

    • Advanced Stream and Mend Casting

A course designed specifically for anglers fishing on moving water. Much of the content is applicable to saltwater fishing and dealing with tidal flow. Learn creative or tricky casts for tight spots, curve casts, reach casts, slack line casts on water and aerial mending techniques. All river fishers should attend one of these classes.

    • Advanced Tune Up

This is a general improvements and troubleshooting class. Like golf, good fly casting skills need to be worked on regularly. We recommend all experienced casters undertake our Tune Up class once, or preferably twice, a season. This class should be a regular and ongoing class for all fly fishers once they have completed our program. Expose yourself to new casts, new techniques; sharpen your timing, accuracy and distance. After 15 years casting instruction I work with a dozen or so casters that are at a level where they can cast as well as me. They work regularly on their casting and they continue to attend TUNE UP classes. They believe my teaching changes from year to year and they are continually learning from me.

    • Private Lessons: $300/1  or bring a friend with you and pay a further $150 on the day.

These individual or small group lessons are perhaps one of the most convenient ways for you to progress your casting and fishing skills. It is often possible to meet up within 15 minutes of your city office. In a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio environment I have absolutely tremendous outcomes. Personalised practice drills and individualised fine-tuning will have you casting like a champion in no time flat.

This more intimate learning opportunity gives us the ability to utilize video analysis and the fantastic Sage Casting Analyzer. The analyser gives us finite measurements of the 8 most important aspects of your casting stroke. Students that have already had exposure to this device are raving about it. Come along and experience it yourself.

This is a highly personalise class that wont just get you out of the office for a couple of hours. It will take you to the next level in fly casting.

In many cases there are alternating morning and afternoon advanced modules. This enables you to save
travelling time, come for the day and experience two separate classes. This is a great way to advance your
skills quickly.
